Pedestrian Injuries in New Jersey

Bellmawr, NJ - Nine-Year-Old Struck by Driver in Front of E.M. Burke School

Pedestrian accidents take place in New Jersey with an alarming frequency when compared to other states. The NJTPA reported that more than 175 pedestrians were killed in New Jersey automobile accidents in one recent year. This does not include the several hundred pedestrians who were lucky enough to survive being hit by a negligent driver.

Pedestrians do not have a fraction of the protection that those in trucks, buses, and cars take for granted. This means that every time they take a walk or go for a jog, they risk serious, catastrophic, and even fatal injuries.

In truth, pedestrian safety has become such an issue throughout the state, that the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority has put into effect a program called Street Smart, designed to teach people about pedestrian awareness and safety.

While jaywalkers can certainly cause pedestrian accidents, an overwhelming percentage of pedestrian injuries and fatalities are the results of reckless or careless drivers who fail to yield the right-of-way.
