New York Motorcycle Collisions
The most common cause of New York motorcycle accidents is drivers who fail to notice motorcyclists on the roadway. Oftentimes, drivers fail to check their blind spots when changing lanes, become distracted by their phones or something else inside their vehicle, or fail to use their turn signal when changing lanes. When these things happen, it becomes impossible for motorcyclists to react in time to prevent an accident from happening. These accidents are always caused by negligent drivers.
Statistics tracked by the New Jersey government highlight the fact that there were over 50 motorcycle collisions in 2018 that were fatal for the biker. These accidents and other non-fatal collisions involving motorcyclists were caused by several different problems. Nearly half of all motorcycle crashes happen at intersections. In actuality, almost 70% of all motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers who fail to see the motorcycle rider.
While a percentage of motorcycle accidents are undoubtedly caused by amateur riders or issues navigating a treacherous curve in the roadway, a far more significant rate of accidents are caused by negligent drivers on the roadway.
For instance, many motorcycle crashes are the result of drivers who choose to operate their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These incidents sometimes involve motorcyclists who are intoxicated, but the overwhelming majority are caused by the drivers of passenger vehicles. Even though alcohol is a common factor in severe New Jersey motorcycle accidents, it is just one of many causes.
Similar to alcohol, speed is a common factor in motorcycle collisions. If the driver of a passenger vehicle was speeding, they can be held responsible for their recklessness. If the motorcyclist was also speeding, it will be considered a contributing factor but not necessarily the defining cause of the accident.
Other frequent causes of motorcycle crashes that happen in the United States and throughout the state of New York include traffic violations, such as texting behind the wheel, failing to stop at a stop sign or traffic light, and failure to yield.
