Bronx, NY – Bronx Pedestrians Injured When NYPD Vehicle Crashes onto Sidewalk at Hoe Ave and Westchester AveNY/NJ Legal News
Bronx, NY (October 07, 2022) – On Thursday, October 6th, a marked NYPD vehicle collided with another car, causing it to jump a curb and plow through a crowd of people on the sidewalk leaving 10 Bronx pedestrians injured.
The incident took place at about 3:00 p.m. at Westchester Avenue and Hoe Avenue in Foxhurst. Officers with the 41st Precinct were responding to reports of vehicle theft in progress.
NYPD officials said the accident intervened in crime prevention efforts.
Reports show that the responding officers crossed into oncoming traffic on Westchester Avenue in order to maneuver around a civilian vehicle stopped at a red light. The civilian vehicle then made a lefthand turn during which it clipped the front of the squad car, and sent it careening through a group of pedestrians standing on a nearby sidewalk.
Other members of the department responded to render aid to the civilians.
10 victims sustained injuries. They ranged in age from 65 years old to 2 years old including a child inside the civilian car and a 5-year-old child on the sidewalk.
Four of the Bronx pedestrians injured are in life-threatening condition. Paramedics transported them to Jacobi Medical Center and Lincoln Hospital for immediate treatment.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Bronx Pedestrians Injured
Bronx pedestrians injured by vehicles almost always sustain serious injuries. This is due to the difference in the weight, and size of the vehicle in contrast to the person. A person hit by a car typically sustains three distinct points of injury. The first is the initial strike of the vehicle’s bumper. The second is the hood or windscreen. The third impact is the asphalt.
These impacts can lead to serious injuries including:
- Head trauma/Traumatic brain injuries
- Broken or fractured bones
- Spinal cord damage
- Emotional anguish
The most common pedestrian injuries observed in adult victims are musculoskeletal injuries to the lower extremities. Due to a child’s low center of gravity, traumatic brain injuries are common. Other typical injuries include their head and upper torso.
If you are injured as a New York pedestrian, you are entitled to bring legal action against the responsible party.
