Bronx, NY – Four-Year-Old Killed in Scooter Accident on Bailey Ave

Bronx, NY (August 17, 2022) – A 4-year-old boy died on Sunday, August 14th in the neighborhood of Kingsbridge Heights when the electric scooter he was riding on with his dad crashed into a car.

At about 9:20 p.m., the pair was traveling southbound along Bailey Avenue in the area of West 193rd Street when the driver attempted to overtake a sedan going in the same direction.  As the scooter passed the left side of the vehicle, the driver of the car tried to make a lefthand turn causing the two vehicles to collide.

The impact sent the boy and his father sprawling onto a curb. The child sustained serious head injuries.

Emergency responders transported the boy to a local hospital where he passed away.

Neither the father nor the sedan driver was seriously injured.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Scooter Accidents in New York

Bronx, NY - Four-Year-Old Killed in Scooter Accident on Bailey Ave

Several years ago, a study was performed on the safety of scooters in New York. The study looked at data from across the state. The Department of Transportation gathered the information used in the report, which showed that the state had seen the smallest number of scooter and moped accidents since 1998.

Statistically, accidents happen more often in the afternoons and evenings, while weekends have the highest fatality rates. The fatal scooter accident rate also increased significantly during the summer months.

The report’s contributors also noticed some clear risk factors where fatal accidents were concerned:

  • Licensed drivers: More than 40% of fatalities involved an unlicensed operator
  • Age: Roughly 56% of those killed were under 35
  • Sex: Nearly 100% of those who died in electric-powered vehicle crashes were male
