A report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration extensively analyzes patterns of sex, age, and driver behavior in intersection accidents. A few of the more notable findings of this report include:

  • Accidents at intersections with stop signs or traffic signals are often the result of illegal maneuvers or driver inattention.
  • Left-turn intersection accidents are often the result of misjudgment of another driver’s distance and speed or an obstructed view.
  • Accidents involving right-turns at intersections with stop signs are often the result of an incorrect assumption of another driver’s actions.
  • Male drivers are more apt to cause an intersection accident by performing illegal maneuvers, incorrect assumption of another driver’s actions, and speeding. Female drivers most frequently cause intersection accidents through an incorrect assumption of another driver’s actions, internal distractions, and inattention.
  • For elderly drivers, popular causes of intersection accidents include miscalculation of another driver’s distance and speed, along with inadequate surveillance.
