Brooklyn, NY (December 1, 2022) – A hit-and-run driver reportedly struck a mother and her four young children on Wednesday night in Brooklyn. Police and witnesses reported that the driver sped through school bus stop signs and collided with the family of five before leaving the scene.
The 41-year-old mother, traveling with a baby stroller, was collecting two of her children from the school bus stop at the corner of Avenue J and New York Avenue in Midwood when the driver crashed into the family just before 5:00 p.m., authorities said.
Witness statements reveal that the stroller was lying on the ground after the crash. Some of the kids were in the midst of getting off the bus when they were struck by the driver.
The woman ended up pinned under the bus, screaming for help, according to information from reports. The driver fled the scene, however, the vehicle was recovered a short time later, unoccupied. Witnesses reported that a woman fled the vehicle.
Authorities in Brooklyn continue to investigate.
We hope for the full recovery of the injured victims.
New York Car Accidents
Hit-and-run accidents are some of the most dangerous traffic accidents that can happen due to the fact that when people are injured, they need help as quickly as possible, and oftentimes, the only person available to call for help is the person they were involved in the accident with. When that person flees the scene without stopping to call for help, this can put injured parties in serious danger of their injuries worsening or worse before they can get medical attention.
In New York, hit-and-run crashes are common, happening thousands of times per year. People sustain severe injuries and lose their lives in hit-and-run accidents, as well as other types of accidents in New York, every single day. In the first quarter of 2022, traffic-related deaths increased by 44% in New York City, the most populated place in the Empire State.
Most of these crashes are completely preventable. Driver negligence is on the rise in New York and throughout the country, causing over 90% of reported car crashes every single year. Driver distraction is the worst type of driver negligence that exists today, causing over 400,000 vehicle collisions per year in the United States and taking the lives of over 3,000 people. This is more auto accidents, and crash-related fatalities than the entire state of New York sees per year.
