When a rear-end collision takes place, most people believe that the rear vehicle is always at fault. Although this is correct in the majority of situations, the assignation of blame will depend on many different factors.

For example, if a car carelessly switches lanes in front of other drivers and then suddenly brakes, the rear car will most likely not be held responsible. Furthermore, if a car at a dead stop in traffic is rear-ended and, because of this, rams the car in front of them, that middle car will typically not be deemed responsible for the crash.
