Edison, NJ (August 29, 2022) – Two people are in the hospital with injuries they sustained when they were hit by an out-of-control motorist who then fled the scene of a car show on Sunday, August 28th.

The incident took place near the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison where crowds were gathered for Wekfest, a custom car show when the driver of a BMW lost control of his vehicle and careened into a crowd of people standing along a grassy area near the roadside.

According to police, two people were struck: a 20-year-old man from West Orange who injured his leg, and a 49-year-old man from South Plainfield who experienced head trauma. Both were transferred to a local hospital.

A local source said that one of the victims had a pet turtle with him who was also injured when the crash occurred. The turtle was treated at a local animal hospital.

Police have since identified the hit-and-run driver as Darius Gomez. Via a post on Instagram, Gomez indicated that he was responsible for the mayhem and is going to turn himself in.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Pedestrian Injuries in New Jersey

Edison, NJ - Two People, Turtle Injured by Hit-and-Run Driver; Suspects Uses Instagram to Confess

Every pedestrian injury case is distinct and the weight of the claim lies in the severity and longevity of the pedestrian’s injuries. A claim’s value is comprised of hospital expenses and additional medical costs along with any lost income. These are combined with any subjective, non-monetary losses such as pain, suffering, and a diminished quality of life.

Pedestrian victims may be qualified to collect compensation from the insurer of the property manager or owner if a treacherous circumstance or condition on their footpath or in their parking lot had a hand in the incident.

In specific cases, victims may also be eligible to bring a suit for recovery against a third party, such as the town, county, or city where the accident took place in the event that dangerous road conditions or a poorly designed intersection played a role.

Standard forms of financial compensation that injured pedestrians are usually awarded include:

  • Hospital, doctor, medical, and other healthcare provider bills
  • Paramedic and ambulance costs
  • Physical rehabilitation expenses
  • Transportation to and from medically required appointments
  • Prescription medication costs
  • Lost earnings from being unable to work
  • Pain/Suffering
  • Exemplary damages
