Franklin, NJ – Off-Duty Officer Charged in Fatal DUI Collision on Somerset St near Voorhees Ave

Franklin, NJ (August 30, 2023) – As previously reported, two lives were taken by a traffic collision in Franklin on Sunday, August 27. Reports show the incident occurred on Somerset Street near Route 27. 

Police arrested a 29-year-old off-duty officer in connection with the accident. He was charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide on Wednesday, August 30, after he drunkenly crashed a vehicle and killed two of his passengers. 

The accident took place on Somerset Street near Voorhees Avenue. The off-duty officer, identified as Amitoj Oberoi, was operating a 2007 Audi Q7 south on Somerset while speeding. He lost control and struck several trees, a utility pole, and lamp posts before stopping. Oberoi was taken to a local trauma center with injuries shortly afterward. 

One of his passengers, age 24, was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical professionals. 

A third passenger, age 20, was seated in the left rear of the vehicle when he became trapped inside due to the collision. He had to be extricated by fire crews and was also pronounced deceased on-site. 

Authorities in Franklin continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
