New York Pedestrian Accidents
In 2020, over 15,000 pedestrian collisions were reported throughout the state of New York. Of these accidents, over 10,000 resulted in personal injuries, and hundreds were fatal. Throughout the United States, over 80,000 injuries result from pedestrian accidents per year. Sadly, over 6,000 pedestrians are killed annually in these crashes. Between 2009 and 2018, pedestrian fatalities in the United States increased by over 50%. This trend prompted safety experts to implement several safety protocols throughout the country, including public awareness campaigns and stricter penalties for impaired and distracted driving. Pedestrian crashes happen for numerous reasons, however, driver negligence continues to be at the top of the list of why traffic accidents take place throughout the United States.
Driver negligence has been a major contributing factor to car crashes in the United States for decades. However, in the past ten years, it has become increasingly worse, causing more injuries and fatalities than ever before. Efforts to improve the safety of pedestrians and reduce negligent driving behaviors are ongoing throughout the state of New York and across the United States.
Statistics concerning driver negligence point to trends including increased instances of distracted driving and intoxicated driving. These are due to the proliferation of mobile devices and smartphones, as well as a possible increase in fatigue, stress, and financial pressure on Americans.
Pedestrian accidents are often more severe than other types of accidents because pedestrians travel with no protection against the force of large, fast-moving vehicles. In the case of a traffic collision, a pedestrian is likely to suffer serious or even catastrophic/fatal injuries.
