Speed limits are not arbitrarily assigned.  Federal, state, and city governments rely on qualified traffic engineers to define the safest speed of travel on every roadway.  The posted speed limit is the highest legal speed at which you may travel in order to safely reach your destination. It needs to be taken seriously in order to prevent dangerous car accidents.

Driving faster than the posted speed limit by even five mph is enough to make the difference between a minor fender-bender and a major catastrophic accident.
