New Jersey Auto Collisions
In New Jersey, the number one leading cause of car crashes is presently distracted driving. Nationally, more than 2,800 people were killed due to driver distraction in 2018. This averages out to about eight people who lose their lives daily due to distracted driving. The National Highway Transportation Administration reports that 8.5% of all accident deaths are caused by distracted driving. The New Jersey State Police Department Fatal Accident Investigation Unit found that approximately 150 of those fatalities happened in the Garden State.
Anything that takes your attention away from your immediate surroundings and the road while driving is considered a distraction. There are three main types of driver distraction, according to information provided by the NHTSA:
- Visual: taking your eyes off the road
- Manual: removing your hands from the wheel
- Cognitive: thinking about something other than driving
Some prevalent forms of distracted driving include texting and driving, eating, talking to passengers, and looking out the window.
