Intersection Crashes in New Jersey
Intersections are the most common areas for traffic accidents, accounting for nearly 40% of all motor vehicle collisions in the United States.
From 2008 to 2012, more than 1,000 people were killed in intersection crashes statewide with Ocean, Middlesex, and Essex counties leading the state. They are the third most common form of car accidents in New Jersey and can happen for a variety of reasons, the most common of which are:
- Failing to yield to other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists
- Failure to obey traffic signs/lights
- Rolling stops
A busy intersection could be equipped with stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights, and accidents would still take place. No matter what signs or lights are present, there will always be people who recklessly plow through intersections. This is especially true for drivers who are under the influence.
