Howell, NJ – Two Hospitalized Following Dual School Bus Collision on Rt 9

Howell, NJ (May 18, 2022) – Two people are in the hospital after their involvement in a collision between two school buses and a single SUV on Wednesday, May 18th.

Fortunately, no children were on board either bus involved in the incident, which took place at about 8:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Route 9 in the area of New Friendship Road.

According to officers from the Howell Police Department, a video taken into evidence shows both buses on the premises of a Sonic Drive-In. One was partially blocking a driveway exiting the drive-thru while the other was half on the grass and sidewalk to the side of the restaurant.  The hood of the second bus was bent at an upward angle.

Both buses sustained serious front-end damage and a black SUV, also heavily damaged, behind them facing the wrong way on Route 9

One bus said Durham School Services on the side and the other said Jay’s Bus Sevice.

As of 12:50 p.m., Route 9 was still shut down and traffic had backed up for almost four miles beginning at Route 195.

Howell police have not responded to any requests for additional information.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Howell, NJ - Two Hospitalized Following Dual School Bus Collision on Rt 9

The highly-regarded school bus injury lawyers at Metro Law have the resources and experience necessary to thoroughly investigate the cause of a school bus accident and build a solid personal injury claim that centers around your rights and needs.

Numerous factors can play a role in a school bus crash, including:

  • Distracted, fatigued, or drunk drivers
  • Inadequately trained or reckless bus operators
  • Failure to repair or insufficient maintenance on the bus
  • Dangerous or defective parts
  • Inclement weather conditions
  • Inadequate road signage, malfunctioning stoplights, or poorly maintained roadways

An exhaustive inspection of the events surrounding the incident will help decide if liability is placed on the driver of another vehicle, a parts manufacturer, a government entity, the school bus operator themselves, or another party altogether.

School bus accidents are often quite serious due to the large number of passengers they have onboard in addition to a lack of any modern safety features that come in almost all passenger vehicles.

Common injuries sustained by people involved in school bus crashes include:

  • Trauma to the head
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Damage to the spinal cord
  • Injuries to the back and neck
  • Fractured or broken bones
  • Internal organ damage or bleeding
  • Lacerations and contusions
  • Severe burns
  • Emotional distress

After a serious school bus collision, victims could be hospitalized for several weeks or even several months while they convalesce from their crash-related injuries. The financial, physical, and psychological effects of any motor vehicle accident are usually cumulative. Injured victims and their families should not have to fight their way through the catastrophic economic outcomes of a preventable accident.

Those injured in school bus collisions often require continuing medical treatments that are prohibitively expensive and will place their family under financial duress.
