Our thoughts are with everyone affected as they recover.

Evidence gathered in the hours and days after a crash tends to play a central role in how a claim is later evaluated.
Photos of vehicle damage, the intersection, and any visible road conditions can help establish what happened before the scene changes or vehicles are moved. Even simple details, like traffic signal positioning or weather conditions at the time, can matter later.
Witness statements are usually most reliable when collected soon after a crash, since memories can fade or become less precise over time. When mutual aid units respond alongside local emergency services, records and observations may end up split across more than one responding agency, which makes it worthwhile to identify all parties who were present.
New Jersey follows a modified comparative negligence rule, so a person can still recover damages as long as they're found 50% or less at fault, with their recovery reduced by their own share of responsibility. Fault typically hinges on specific details like right-of-way and vehicle positioning, thorough documentation can directly affect how a claim is resolved.
However, it can be hard to recollect all this evidence alone while still recovering from injuries. This is why many people turn to a car accident lawyer to help them get started. A lawyer can help track down police reports, request records from multiple responding agencies, and identify other evidence that may support a claim.
