After a car accident, evidence rarely waits. Business surveillance systems typically record over footage within days, tow yards release vehicles, and witnesses' memories fade.
Piscataway sees steady traffic on I-287, and stores and offices along those routes may have cameras that capture the roadway, though retention periods vary widely.
Something that many people don’t know is that vehicles carry their own records. Many modern cars store event data, such as speed and braking in the seconds before a vehicle stops. That information can be overwritten or lost if the car is repaired, sold, or salvaged.
Photos of the vehicles, the road, and visible damage, along with witness contact information, give a later reviewer something concrete to compare with each driver's account.
A car accident lawyer can help send preservation requests to insurers, businesses, and vehicle owners, ask that footage and vehicle data be kept, and organize photos and medical records so they are ready when a claim is evaluated. A request sent early may reach a recording before it is erased.
