A publication distributed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration examined patterns of driver behavior, sex, and age in intersection collisions. Some of the more intriguing findings of the study cited in the publication include:

  • Left-turn intersection crashes are often the result of misjudgment of another driver’s distance and speed or an obstructed view.
  • Collisions at intersections with stop signs or traffic signals are often the result of unlawful maneuvers or driver inattention.
  • For elderly drivers, frequent causes of intersection accidents include miscalculation of another driver’s distance and speed, along with inadequate surveillance.
  • Male drivers are more apt to cause intersection crashes by performing unlawful maneuvers, incorrect assumptions of another driver’s actions, and speeding. Female drivers most often cause intersection crashes through an incorrect assumption of another driver’s actions, internal distractions, and inattention.
  • Collisions involving right-turns at intersections with stop signs are often the result of an incorrect assumption of another driver’s actions.
