Lawrence, NJ – Dump Truck & SUV Collide, Cause Injuries on Rt 1 near Quaker Bridge Mal

Lawrence, NJ (October 26, 2022) – An injury crash happened on a roadway in Lawrence Township on October 26. Shortly after 3:10 p.m., a dump truck and an SUV collided for reasons still under police investigation.

Sources report the accident occurred along Route 1 near the Quaker Bridge Mall. Traffic in the area was reduced to a standstill while crews worked at the wreck site.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Route 1 just before the Kelly Viaduct. During the incident, the dump truck struck the Jersey barrier separating southbound Route 1 and northbound Route 1. The force of the crash tore down several feet of chain link fence that sat along the top of the barrier. The impact also put holes in the barrier itself, causing pieces of concrete and debris to scatter into the northbound lanes of the roadway.

Both vehicles then came to a complete stop near the ramps of the Kelly Viaduct. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage in the collision.

Firefighters from Lawrence Township were called to the scene to attempt to contain diesel fuel that had spilled out of the dump truck. The truck contained about 70 gallons of fuel, reports said. A large portion of that fuel spilled out onto the roadway.

A New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection response team as well as the hazardous materials task force with the Trenton Fire Department were called sometime later to help clean up the fuel and minimize any impact from the spill.

At this time, it remains unclear how many people were hurt in the accident. Police in Lawrence continue to investigate the details of the accident.

We hope for the full recovery of those with injuries.
