Mahwah, NJ – One Dead in Collision With Tractor-Trailer on Rt 17

Mahwah, NJ (May 26, 2022) – A passenger died when the minivan in which he was riding crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on the morning of Thursday, May 26th outside of a truck stop on Route 17 in Mahwah.

Multiple responders confirmed that a Toyota Sienna plowed into the rear-end of the tractor-trailer as it was stopped in the righthand in front of the Pilot Travel Center in the southbound lanes of Route 17 at about 10:00 a.m.

The passenger died when the front passenger side of the minivan hit the lefthand rear corner of the rig’s trailer.

The highway was shut down between Corporate Drive and Route 202 to allow rescuers, investigators, and other responders to perform their duties.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigations Unit joined firefighters, police, and Emergency Medical Services workers on the scene, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which gathered evidence.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

In order to claim damages, the respondent named in a wrongful death suit must have violated the duty of care they were obligated to show the victim. The standard of negligence in a wrongful death suit is the behavior that a prudent person would have exhibited in the same or similar circumstances. If a reasonable person would have conducted themselves more carefully or exerted more caution, the respondent will most likely be held liable.

For example, if a driver acted carelessly by violating a driving law, then they have failed in upholding the duty of care they owed to the victim.

Our New Jersey wrongful death attorneys have assisted the bereaved families of several hundred wrongful death victims. We realize the extent of the trauma that comes with losing a family member from the negligent actions of another person.
