Maywood, NJ – Six-Year-Old Critically Injured By Driver on Spring Valley Rd

Maywood, NJ (August 03, 2022) – A 6-year-old child sustained critical injuries after being struck by a car near Memorial Park in Bergen County on Monday, August 1st.

The incident took place at about 12:00 p.m. on Spring Valley Road in Maywood.

Reports show that a Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Spring Valley Road where a south-facing delivery van was stopped in front of a house, effectively obstructing the view of the sidewalk.

The child stepped out into the roadway from in front of the standing delivery van and was struck by the Honda’s driver, a 25-year-old resident of Englewood, who remained at the scene.

The borough Police Chief said it was “a serious and unfortunate accident.”

The child was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. An update on their condition has not been made available.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Maywood, NJ - Six-Year-Old Critically Injured By Driver on Spring Valley Rd

When compared to other states, New Jersey has an astonishingly high rate of pedestrian accidents. Due to this, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety has implemented select programs designed to educate, enforce and engineer a reduction in the number of these kinds of accidents.

One of the division’s endeavors was to develop and enforce stricter crosswalk laws. Prior to April 2010, state law merely required drivers to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. From that time on, however, all drivers have been required to stop for pedestrians inside a marked crosswalk.

Additionally, if a car comes to a stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and another car attempts to pass the stopped car, the driver of the passing vehicle can be issued a traffic citation.

Drivers are also required to stop for pedestrians crossing unmarked intersections.
