Mechanical Failure Sends Cyclist Over Handlebars in Hackettstown, NJ

Hackettstown, NJ (August 24, 2026) – A 61-year-old Hackettstown man was hurt on Friday morning, August 21, after a mechanical failure on his bicycle sent him over the handlebars while he was riding on Grand Avenue.

The Hackettstown Police and emergency units were called to the 800 block of Grand Avenue around 11:01 a.m. after receiving a report that described a vehicle striking a cyclist.

When officers arrived, they found the man lying face down in the roadway. Investigators determined that he had not been struck by a car. He instead went over the handlebars while pedaling after a mechanical failure in the bicycle's rear gear mechanism caused the rear wheel to lock and the chain to derail.

He was injured in the face, neck, and head and was taken to Hackettstown Medical Center before being transferred to Morristown Medical Center for further care.

The crash is still being reviewed by officials.
