Newark, NJ – Driver Dead, Passenger Critical After Crash on US Rt 1 & 9 near McClellan St

Newark, NJ (July 11, 2023) – A driver lost their life, and a passenger suffered critical injuries after a two-vehicle collision happened in Newark. Police responded to the scene shortly after the collision occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 9. 

Sources say the collision occurred on Route 1 & 9 North near McClellan Street near the Newark Liberty International Airport. Two vehicles crashed in the area, according to information provided by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. 

Cheikh Faye, 35, of Weehawken, was pronounced deceased on-site just before 4:00 a.m. The passenger present in the vehicle was transported to University Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, police said. Their name has not been reported at this time.
