Intersection Crashes in New Jersey
Intersections are the most common areas for motor vehicle accidents. From 2008 to 2012, more than 1,000 people were killed in intersection crashes statewide with Ocean, Middlesex, and Essex counties leading the state.
Intersection accidents account for roughly 40% of all traffic accidents in the United States. They are the third most common form of auto accident in New Jersey and can occur for a variety of reasons, the most common of which are:
- Failing to yield to other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists
- Failure to obey traffic signs/lights
- Rolling stops
A particularly busy intersection could be equipped with stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights, and accidents would still happen. No matter what signs or lights are present, there will always be people who recklessly plow through intersections. This is especially true for drivers who are under the influence.
