New Jersey Pedestrian Accidents
In New Jersey, pedestrian collisions occur at a higher rate than in other states. The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority reports that more than 175 pedestrians were killed in one recent year. This number does not include hundreds of pedestrians who suffered non-fatal injuries when they were struck by drivers who were distracted, intoxicated, fatigued, or otherwise negligent.
If someone you love has been injured by the actions of a negligent driver, you may be eligible to bring legal action against the negligent party who caused the crash. While pedestrians are sometimes also at fault for their accidents due to distraction, jaywalking, intoxication, or another form of negligence, most of the time, drivers are the ones who cause injurious or fatal pedestrian accidents. In fact, over half of the time, negligent drivers are the ones who cause injurious and fatal pedestrian accidents in the United States. Each year, over 5,000 pedestrians lose their lives in auto collisions across the US.
Protecting pedestrians and preserving their safety has become a serious issue across the Garden State, so much so that the NJTPA created a program called Street Smart. This program was implemented in order to better inform individuals about pedestrian safety and awareness in an effort to reduce the number of accidents that end in injuries and death for pedestrians.
When pedestrians travel, they are totally unprotected against the force of vehicles that move much faster and weigh much more than they do. This means that when they are traveling, they are risking sustaining severe and sometimes even catastrophic or fatal injuries.
