Commercial Bus Accidents in New Jersey

Newark, NJ - Seven Hospitalized After Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving NJ Transit Bus at S. Orange Ave and Grove St

From 2005 to 2006, commercial buses were involved in roughly 5% of all large vehicle collisions nationwide, but 14% of all large vehicle collisions in New Jersey. A study conducted on bus crashes for that same two-year window showed that a total of 40 buses were involved in 39 accidents that led to serious injuries or death.

The researchers also discovered that, in nearly half of those accidents, the bus company or bus driver shared some degree of fault.

The reasons most commonly listed in the study include:

  • Driving too fast for current road conditions
  • Illegal turns and lane changes
  • Failing to stay on the roadway when changing lanes
  • Distracted driving
  • Tailgating
  • Defective brakes/Brake failure

As public carriers, bus drivers are obligated to adhere to a higher standard of care than other motor vehicle drivers. Bus companies have a duty to maintain their vehicles in proper working condition to guarantee their passengers’ safety.

After a serious bus crash, victims can be hospitalized for several weeks or even months while they recover from their crash-related injuries. The economic, physical, and emotional impacts of any motor vehicle accident are often cumulative. Injured victims and their families should not have to fight their way through the catastrophic economic outcomes of a preventable accident.

Those injured in bus accidents often require ongoing medical treatments that are prohibitively expensive and will place their family under financial duress.
