Raritan, NJ – Dump Truck Rollover on Rt 31 Leaves Three With Injuries

Raritan, NJ (September 28, 2022) – Three people were injured during a four-vehicle collision that included a loaded dump truck on Tuesday, September 27th in Hunterdon County.

At about 9:20 a.m., officers from the Raritan Township Police Department were dispatched to the scene on Route 31 near milepost 25 for reports of a crash involving an overturned dump truck and three passenger vehicles.

According to bystanders, a vehicle came to a stop in the northbound lanes of the roadway in order to make a turn. Due to the highway’s grading causing visibility issues, however, several vehicles were unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into it.

At that same time, a dump truck hauling a load of sand approached the scene and was also not able to stop in time. The truck struck three vehicles, one of them in the southbound lanes, before losing control and overturning.

Paramedics also responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they transported three of the five vehicle occupants involved in the pile-up to Hunterdon Medical Center for treatment of non-critical injuries.

NJ State DOT Diversion Team was brought in to clean up the spilled sand from the dump truck. All four vehicles were disabled and towed from the scene.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Dump Truck Crashes in New Jersey

Raritan, NJ - Dump Truck Rollover on Rt 31 Leaves Three With Injuries

Numerous factors can cause an accident involving a passenger vehicle and a dump truck. It is a dump truck driver’s job to operate an extremely large and heavy vehicle that transports loads of different materials in an open container on its back. Given the considerably bigger size of a dump truck, it can be difficult to navigate traffic.

Drivers who are inexperienced do not know how to properly handle emergency situations or, in some cases, how to even drive the vehicle safely. In some scenarios, a driver may be distracted by their phone, stopping them from observing their surroundings.

The most common causes of New Jersey dump truck collisions include:

  • Poor visibility: The container on a dump truck can obstruct the driver’s view of what is next to them and behind them. Blind spots in an oversized truck are much bigger than those on a passenger vehicle and require more diligence when it comes to making sure it is safe to change lanes.
  • High center of gravity: All commercial trucks have a high center of gravity, making them prone to rollovers. Truck drivers are required to make sure that the materials they are transporting are distributed evenly in the bed. Any freight that is loaded improperly can lead to instability with the vehicle’s weight, which will prevent the driver from maintaining control of the truck and could result in a rollover during a sharp turn or unexpected braking.

Being involved in a dump truck accident can cause serious injuries and death.

If you were injured in a dump truck accident, you should seek the guidance of a New Jersey commercial truck accident lawyer who has years of practice in identifying all relevant rules and regulations that could influence your case.
