Stafford, NJ – 15-Year-Old Girl in Serious Condition After Pedestrian Accident on Rt 72

Stafford, NJ (July 14, 2022) – A 15-year-old girl sustained multiple injuries when she was struck by a driver on Route 72 in Stafford Township, on Wednesday, July 13th.

The incident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. near the intersection of West Bay Avenue.

According to sources, 22-year-old Dale Ritchie, a resident of Manahawkin, was merging his 2012 Toyota Tacoma from West Bay Avenue onto the westbound lanes of Route 72 when he struck a 15-year-old girl from Barnegat who was crossing the street with a group of friends coming from the Holiday Inn.

She endured numerous injuries to her lower body and head. She was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center and was later med-flighted to Jersey Shore Medical Center. There have been no updates on her condition.

Assisting at the scene were Stafford Township First Aid, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Route 72 westbound was restricted to a single lane of travel for around six hours.

Ritchie’s car was towed from the scene.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Pedestrian Injuries in New Jersey

Standard forms of financial compensation that injured pedestrians are usually awarded include:

  • Hospital, doctor, medical, and other healthcare provider bills
  • Physical rehabilitation expenses
  • Paramedic and ambulance costs
  • Prescription medication costs
  • Transportation to and from medically required appointments
  • Lost earnings from being unable to work
  • Exemplary damages
  • Pain/Suffering

In specific cases, victims may be eligible to bring a suit for recovery against a third party, such as the town, county, or city where the accident took place in the event that dangerous road conditions or a poorly designed intersection played a role. Pedestrian victims may also be qualified to collect compensation from the insurer of the property manager or owner if a treacherous circumstance or condition on their footpath or in their parking lot had a hand in the incident.

Every pedestrian injury case is distinct and the weight of the claim lies in the severity and longevity of the pedestrian’s injuries. A claim’s value is comprised of their hospital expenses and additional medical costs along with any lost income. These are combined with any subjective, non-monetary losses such as pain, suffering, and a diminished quality of life.

New Jersey’s Comparative Negligence Act says that a victim is entitled to compensation for their losses, even if they are found to share in the liability for the event that caused them.

An insurance company will assign each individual involved in the incident a percentage of liability. The total amount of losses that the injured pedestrian is ultimately awarded will be reduced by that same percentage.
