New Jersey Car Crashes
Millions of car crashes take place yearly in the United States, making them a substantial concern when it comes to public safety. These accidents cause thousands of people to lose their lives yearly and millions to sustain injuries. In New Jersey alone, hundreds of thousands of collisions are reported yearly that injure and take the lives of thousands of people.
Across the United States, approximately 6 million collisions are reported per year that injure around 3 million and end the lives of about 40,000. Negligent driving is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the main cause of motor vehicle accidents, injuries, and deaths in the United States. Individuals in the United States aged 15-20 most often lose their lives in car crashes. Several key behaviors demonstrated by negligent drivers include:
- Speeding: traveling below or above the posted speed limit risks the lives of everyone on the road. Yearly, more than 10,000 individuals are killed due to the actions of drivers who are speeding.
- Intoxication: Driving while intoxicated on drugs and/or alcohol can significantly affect a driver’s ability to safely operate their vehicle. More than 30% of the national crash fatality rate is caused by intoxicated driving.
- Distraction: Anything that takes a driver’s attention away from the road is considered distracted driving. Using a smartphone, eating, grooming, or looking at and talking to other people inside the vehicle are some common examples that often lead to collisions. Driving distracted causes over 3,000 people to lose their lives per year in the United States.
