Three Firefighters Hurt in Apartment Fire in New Brunswick, NJ

September 9, 2026

New Brunswick, NJ (September 9, 2026) – Three firefighters were hurt Tuesday afternoon, September 8, while battling a fire at a New Brunswick apartment building at 88 Louis Street that displaced 22 residents from their homes.

According to the New Brunswick Fire Department, the fire broke out around 1:24 p.m. and was brought under control by 5:13 p.m. Two of the injured firefighters are based in New Brunswick, while the third responded from a neighboring town.

Photos showed heavy damage on one side of the three-story, eight-unit building. Red Cross volunteers stepped in to provide temporary lodging, food, and clothing to 18 displaced residents, with more assistance planned for others as it becomes available.

There are no details regarding how the fire initiated. Officials continue to investigate.

We hope the injured firefighters recover quickly and fully.

Workers' Comp Rules for On-Duty Firefighter Injuries in New Brunswick, NJThree Firefighters Hurt in Apartment Fire

In New Jersey, firefighters hurt on duty are generally covered under the state's workers' compensation system, which provides medical treatment and wage-replacement benefits regardless of fault. Public safety employees in cities like New Brunswick are covered whether an injury happens at a structure fire, a vehicle response, or routine training. Coverage typically begins as soon as the injury is reported to the employing municipality.

On-duty firefighter injuries can range from smoke inhalation and burns to sprains, fractures, and long-term respiratory issues from prolonged exposure to heat and debris. Recovery can leave firefighters dealing with extended time away from physically demanding duties, specialized medical monitoring, and in some cases, temporary reassignment to lighter responsibilities while healing.

In these cases, a workers’ compensation lawyer can help a firefighter move through the workers' compensation claims process, making sure medical bills and lost wages are properly documented and submitted.

Sometimes, fires are caused by another party's negligence, for example, faulty wiring or an unmaintained rental property. In such cases, additional legal options may exist beyond standard workers' compensation benefits, though claims against a property owner in these situations can involve added legal complexity.

It is common that firefighters who are hurt while responding to a call often focus on healing rather than paperwork. At Metro Law, we can help explain how New Jersey's workers' compensation system applies to each specific case.

We can review the specific details of your case and help you better understand your options. If you or someone you know was hurt while on duty, you can reach out to Metro Law at (800) 469-6476 to talk through the available next steps.
