Two Children Killed in House Fire on Hewitt St in Trenton, NJ

August 26, 2026

Trenton, NJ (August 26, 2026) – Two children died early Wednesday morning, August 26, after a fire broke out inside a three-story home on Hewitt Street.

Trenton Fire was called to the scene just before 4 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire with people reportedly trapped inside. Emergency units arriving on scene found heavy fire coming from the home.

The fire left a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy dead. An adult who was also inside at the time was able to escape without injury.

Two responders were hurt while working the fire. One was taken to hospital for burns, and another was treated for respiratory issues.

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor before spreading through the home.

The home was left in ruins, and two nearby homes sustained damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the children's family during this loss.

What Legal Options Exist After a Fatal House Fire in Trenton, NJ?Two Children Killed in House Fire on Hewitt St

Families who lose a loved one in a fire caused by another party's negligence can generally pursue a wrongful death claim under New Jersey law, which allows a court-appointed personal representative to seek compensation on behalf of surviving family members.

In these types of cases, investigators typically examine the property's maintenance history, wiring conditions, and whether working smoke detectors were installed and inspected as required by the state's Uniform Fire Code.

New Jersey also permits what's known as a survival action, a separate claim tied to whatever pain, suffering, or losses the person experienced between the fire and their passing. These two claims commonly move forward together, since a wrongful death claim covers losses to the family, while a survival action addresses what happened to the individual person before they died.

These cases frequently depend on records that typically a family wouldn't otherwise think to request, which is why a wrongful death lawyer can step in to make sure that key evidence is preserved to build a strong claim.

A lawyer can work to obtain fire marshal reports, prior code violation history, and any documentation tied to the property's smoke detector compliance. New Jersey's statute of limitations generally gives families two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim, so it is crucial to gather this evidence early.
