Two Pedestrians Seriously Hurt in Crash on Main St in Bloomingdale, NJ

September 28, 2026

Bloomingdale, NJ (September 28, 2026) – On Sunday, September 27, a vehicle struck two people in a marked crosswalk on Main Street near Ryerson Avenue in Bloomingdale. Police said the report came in around 7:39 p.m. after several 911 calls.

The Bloomingdale Police said in a press release that a man and a woman had been walking across the street when a Kia Soul hit them. The 64-year-old woman driving the Kia stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Both pedestrians were thrown into the air and landed in the roadway a distance apart. Passersby stayed with them and offered blankets and umbrellas until emergency units arrived. Bad weather kept a helicopter from flying, so both people were taken by ambulance to a trauma center in Paterson with serious bodily injuries.

The investigation into this accident remains active, and the Bloomingdale Police Department Traffic Unit Investigation Team is leading it.

We are thinking of both people as they recover.

Who Can Be Responsible When a Driver Hits a Pedestrian in Bloomingdale, NJ?

Two Pedestrians Seriously Hurt in Crash on Main St

Responsibility depends on the facts of each case, but New Jersey law gives pedestrians in marked crosswalks a strong claim to the right of way, and drivers are generally required to stop for them.

If a driver fails to yield, they may be found negligent, though that is not automatic. Investigators and insurers usually look at speed, visibility, weather, and whether the driver was paying attention.

New Jersey follows a modified comparative negligence rule. Under this rule, a pedestrian's compensation can be reduced by their share of fault, and it is barred if that share is more than 50 percent. It is common that insurers argue a pedestrian crossed at the wrong moment or was hard to see, so evidence about the crosswalk, lighting, and weather can matter a great deal.

Pedestrian claims can also involve more than one insurance policy. Drivers in New Jersey typically carry personal injury protection, which may cover medical bills, and a pedestrian may look to a household policy or the driver's liability coverage for other losses.

To build a strong case, a pedestrian accident attorney can help gather crosswalk photos, witness names, and medical records, then review which policies may apply to each particular situation.
