September 1, 2026

Barker, NY (September 1, 2026) – On Sunday, August 30, three people were hurt and taken to the hospital after a Cadillac struck a Kia on Interstate 81 north in the Town of Barker.

The New York State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash around 12:25 p.m., near mile marker 25. According to authorities, a Cadillac traveling north in the right lane tried to merge into the left lane and struck a northbound Kia.

After the impact, the Cadillac hit a guardrail and spun around, coming to rest facing the wrong direction. The Kia rolled over and came to a stop in the median.

The Cadillac's driver was ticketed and taken to UHS Wilson Medical Center. A passenger was also taken to the hospital. The driver of the Kia was taken to the same hospital for evaluation.

Investigators continue to review the accident.

We hope everyone involved has a smooth and full recovery.

How Fault Is Determined After a Crash in Barker, NY

Two-Vehicle Wreck on I-81 Injures Three

Fault in a multi-vehicle wreck is typically established through police reports, witness statements, and physical evidence such as vehicle damage patterns and skid marks.

New York follows a comparative negligence rule, which means more than one driver can share responsibility, and any compensation a person recovers may be reduced by their own percentage of fault.

When multiple vehicles are involved in a crash, victims can face a wide range of injuries. This includes fractures, head trauma, or soft-tissue injuries that aren't always obvious right away. Additionally, if the crash leads to a rollover, it can also cause internal injuries that take time to appear, which is exactly why prompt medical evaluation matters even when someone feels fine right after the accident.

In these cases, legal guidance can help clarify how New York's comparative negligence rule might apply to a specific case and what compensation could be available for medical costs or lost income.

A car accident lawyer can review police findings, gather traffic camera or dashcam footage if available, and consult accident reconstruction experts when the cause of the collision is disputed.
