Veteran, NY – Fatal Three-Vehicle Wreck involving Freightliner on Rt 13

Veteran, NY (October 27, 2023) – A fatal traffic accident was reported in the town of Veteran on the morning of Thursday, October 26. Emergency responders were sent to the wreck site at around 8:20 a.m. after receiving reports concerning the incident.

The wreck happened on Route 13 and took the life of one person, according to reports. Sources say three vehicles collided on Route 13, including a 2019 Chevy Silverado with a trailer attached. The Silverado was operated by a man from Pine Valley, age 25. He began to merge left as the right lane was coming to an end, when a 2016 Ford Fusion operated by an individual, age 41, from Ithaca, attempted to pass him.

The Ford then struck the rear end of the Chevy and trailer, causing the driver to go into the southbound travel lane. A 2018 Freightliner, operated by a 33-year-old Skaneateles resident, driving in the southbound traffic lane, then struck the Chevy. The Chevy’s driver was pronounced deceased on-site.

The driver of the Ford was taken to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania by helicopter while the operator of the Freightliner was evaluated by EMS at the scene.

Police in Veteran continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

We want to offer our sincere sympathies to the deceased victim’s family.

Veteran, NY - Fatal Three-Vehicle Wreck involving Freightliner on Route 13

A traffic collision of any kind can be devastating for anyone involved. Millions of car wecks happen yearly across the United States which end in injuries and fatalities. More than 17,000 traffic accidents occur per day here causing around 7,500 people to sustain injuries and over 100 to lose their lives. The most common reasons these collisions occur include driver negligence such as speeding, distraction, fatigue, and intoxication.

Drivers who travel at unsafe speeds, while intoxicated, distracted, or overtired, risk the lives of everyone they encounter on the roadway, including their own. Negligent driving has become a serious public health issue in the US, especially in the past decade. Being hurt by a negligent driver can be an overwhelming and even devastating experience. Suffering serious crash injuries can land injured victims in the hospital for days or even weeks where they must undergo medical care that is exhausting and expensive.

Traffic accidents involving large trucks like semis are often more severe and devastating than other types of accidents. This is because semi-trucks are usually about 20 to 30 times heavier than the average passenger vehicle. Every year, thousands of people suffer injuries in collisions involving semi-trucks in the United States. These accidents, unfortunately, are often caused by negligence, either on the part of the truck driver or company.
