Millions of auto accidents happen in the United States each year, making them a significant public safety concern. These collisions cause thousands of deaths and injuries and considerable societal and economic damage. Their frequency is alarming, with over 6.7 million reported motor vehicle accidents happening in 2019 alone. Additionally, auto collisions are a leading cause of death throughout the country. In 2019, approximately 36,096 fatalities resulted from auto accidents.
Some common contributing factors to car wrecks in the United States include speeding, impaired driving, driver fatigue, and driver distraction. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognize negligent driving as a substantial cause of motor vehicle accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Several key behaviors demonstrated by negligent drivers include:
- Speeding: traveling above or below the legal speed limit places everyone on the road at severe risk of sustaining injuries or even losing their lives. Each year, over 10,000 people lose their lives in car crashes caused by speeding.
- Intoxication: operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any mind or mood-altering substance can drastically affect a driver’s ability to safely operate their vehicle and is a common cause of motor vehicle collisions. Each year, over 30% of the national accident fatality rate is attributed to drunk or high driving.
- Distraction: any activity that diverts a driver’s attention from their immediate surroundings in the road in front of them, such as using a cell phone, eating, texting, or interacting with people inside their vehicle, is considered distracted driving. Distracted driving causes over 400,000 motor vehicle collisions each year and takes the lives of over 3000 individuals annually.
