Common Causes and Injuries in New Jersey School Bus Accidents
Most parents are not there when their child’s school bus is involved in an accident. This can make getting honest answers regarding the cause of the crash and who was responsible extremely difficult.
The well-established school bus injury attorneys at Metro Law have the experience required to fully investigate the cause of your child’s school bus accident and construct a sound personal injury claim that focuses on your needs and rights.
Multiple factors can contribute to a school bus accident, including:
- Drunk, fatigued, or distracted drivers
- Reckless or inadequately trained bus operators
- Insufficient maintenance or failure to repair the bus
- Defective or dangerous parts
- Inclement weather
- Poorly maintained roadways, malfunctioning stoplights, or inadequate road signage
A detailed review of the events leading up to the accident will help determine whether liability rests with the school bus operator, the driver of another vehicle, a government entity, a parts manufacturer, or another party altogether.
Children’s bodies are still growing and developing, meaning that a child is far more susceptible to injury than an adult. School bus accidents tend to be exceptionally serious not only because their passengers are almost exclusively children, but because of the large number of them they have onboard combined with a lack of the advanced safety features that are present in smaller passenger vehicles.
Common injuries sustained by children involved in school bus collisions include:
- Head trauma
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord damage
- Neck and back injuries
- Broken or fractured bones
- Internal bleeding or organ damage
- Contusions and lacerations
- Serious burns
- Emotional anguish
Following a serious school bus accident, children can be hospitalized for weeks or even months while they recover from their injuries. The emotional, physical, and economic impacts of any vehicle accident are always cumulative. Victims and their families should not be forced to struggle through the disastrous consequences of an avoidable accident.
Children hurt in school bus crashes frequently need ongoing medical treatment that is extremely expensive and can place their entire family under financial duress.
