Intersection Collisions in New Jersey
Intersection accidents account for roughly 40% of all traffic accidents in the United States and are the third most common kind of traffic accident in New Jersey. From 2008 to 2012, more than 1,000 people were killed in intersection crashes statewide with Ocean, Middlesex, and Essex counties leading the state.
Intersection accidents take place for a variety of reasons. The most common causes in New Jersey include:
- Failure to obey traffic signs/lights
- Failing to yield to other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists
- Rolling stops
Intersections are the most common areas for motor vehicle accidents. A particularly busy intersection could be equipped with stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights, and accidents would still happen. No matter what signs or lights are present, there will always be people who recklessly plow through intersections. This is especially true for drivers who are under the influence.
