Olive, NY (August 25, 2026) – Two people were killed on Sunday morning, August 23, after a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on on State Route 28.
The New York State Police responded just after 6:45 a.m. Investigators said a westbound Chevrolet crossed into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons and collided with a Mercedes-Benz.
The driver of the Chevrolet had to be extricated from his vehicle. He received lifesaving measures before being taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, where he later died.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz also had to be extricated from his vehicle and received lifesaving measures there. He was initially taken to Health Alliance Hospital before being transferred to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
It is not clear yet what caused the driver to cross lanes, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to both families during this difficult time.

When a lane-crossing collision claims a life, families are left to navigate funeral arrangements, medical bills, and unanswered questions in the days that follow.
Under New York law, a wrongful death claim allows a court-appointed representative, typically a surviving spouse, adult child, or other close relative, to seek compensation on behalf of the family for the financial support and companionship the deceased would have provided.
A separate survival action can address the pain and losses the victim experienced between the collision and their death, since New York treats this as a distinct claim from wrongful death itself. It is important to note that there is a two-year time limit for families to file the claim, which starts running from the date of the accident.
When investigators work to establish the full sequence of events that led to the wreck, they usually review evidence gathered in the days immediately after the crash, including the state police investigation, vehicle data, and any witness accounts.
While the investigation is still ongoing and time passes, it is key to consider that some evidence is harder to obtain over time. For this reason, many families turn to a wrongful death lawyer to help them request and preserve records early, communicate with insurers, and make sense of how liability may ultimately be assigned.
