Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Wayne, NJ – Elderly Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Motorcycle on Ratzer RdPedestrian fatalities remain a troubling concern in New Jersey, especially as busy roads and intersections continue to see high volumes of vehicle and foot traffic. According to recent data, hundreds of pedestrians are injured or killed each year in the state. Older adults are particularly at risk due to mobility challenges and slower reaction times. Improved infrastructure, careful driving, and community awareness can make a difference in preventing these heartbreaking tragedies.

Understanding the factors that often play a role in pedestrian accidents may help raise awareness and prevent future incidents:

  • Crosswalk Visibility: Poorly marked or poorly lit crosswalks can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, especially in areas with high traffic.
  • Motorist Inattention: Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of pedestrian accidents. Drivers must remain vigilant at all times to spot pedestrians crossing roads.
  • Right of Way Violations: Pedestrians legally have the right of way in many crosswalks, but not all drivers yield as required, putting lives at risk.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, or glare can reduce a driver’s visibility, making it harder to see someone crossing the street until it’s too late.
  • Elderly Pedestrians: Seniors are more vulnerable to severe injuries when struck by a vehicle due to their physical frailty. Special care should be taken when driving near retirement communities or residential neighborhoods.
