Edison, NJ (June 27, 2025) – A tragic crash on Interstate 287 claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman from Piscataway Tuesday morning, June 24. The deadly collision occurred around 10:35 a.m. near milepost 1.6, just past the Route 1 exit, and involved a minivan and a box truck, according to New Jersey State Police.
The minivan, operated by the woman’s 77-year-old husband, was heading south in the left lane when it struck the back of a box truck traveling in the center lane. Authorities believe the crash happened as the minivan approached slower-moving traffic ahead. The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle’s front end. Judith Kennen, a passenger in the minivan, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. The driver of the box truck was not hurt in the incident.
Traffic on the highway was disrupted as police investigated and cleared the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine what led to the fatal rear-end collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Judith Kennen.
Car Accidents in New Jersey
Rear-end collisions are one of the most frequent types of crashes on New Jersey roadways. According to state data, thousands of these incidents are reported each year, especially on major highways like I-287, where traffic speeds vary widely and congestion is common. These crashes can range from minor fender benders to fatal events, especially when vehicles are traveling at high speeds.
After a fatal collision, families often face overwhelming challenges that go beyond their immediate grief. Here are some critical issues they commonly encounter:
- Unexpected Funeral Costs: The sudden loss of a loved one in a crash often means families are faced with funeral expenses they hadn’t planned for. These costs can include transportation, burial, and services, and may quickly become financially burdensome.
- Loss of Companionship: The emotional void left by a spouse or close family member can have lasting effects. The psychological pain and sense of loss are often profound and may require ongoing support or counseling.
- Legal Complexities in Fatal Crashes: When a fatality occurs, legal questions often follow. Families may seek answers through a wrongful death claim to establish fault and pursue damages for their loss.
- Insurance Disputes: Even in straightforward cases, insurance companies may dispute claims or attempt to minimize payouts. Having documentation and legal support is critical in obtaining the compensation a family deserves.
If you’ve lost someone in a tragic crash, it is crucial to speak with an experienced wrongful death attorney. An attorney can protect your family’s rights, help gather necessary evidence, and ensure you aren’t taken advantage of by insurance companies during this difficult time. The sooner you reach out, the sooner you can begin pursuing justice and closure.
