Newark, NJ (November 20, 2025) – A 60-year-old man died after a fire broke out early Tuesday, November 18, inside a four-family home on Telford Street. The fire started around 8:19 a.m. on the second floor of the building.
First responders entered the home and found the victim, identified as a 60-year-old man, unresponsive in a second-floor hallway. Crews brought him outside and rushed him to University Hospital. Doctors worked to save him, but he died from his injuries shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Authorities said the fire remained contained to the second floor, but smoke moved through the structure. No other injuries were reported. Investigators worked at the scene through the morning to document the damage and interview residents.
Officials have not yet determined what caused the fire. Fire inspectors and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are reviewing evidence to learn more about how the blaze began.
