Newark, NJ (April 2, 2026) – Two people lost their lives in a crash on Wednesday, April 1, along Interstate 78 near mile marker 56.6 in Newark. Emergency units responded around 6:27 p.m. after reports of a serious accident in the eastbound local lanes.
New Jersey State Police said an Isuzu box truck was traveling on the highway when it veered off the road to the right. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier, hit a light pole, and then overturned before leaving the roadway. The truck then fell from the I-78 overpass into a dirt area below.
The driver, identified as 35-year-old Chad Hill of Edison, was ejected during the crash and suffered fatal injuries. A passenger, a 46-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, also died as a result of the accident. Officials are withholding his name at this time pending notification of his family.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
