Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey
Pedestrian accidents, particularly those involving large vehicles like buses, are among the most severe types of collisions. These accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries, as pedestrians are highly vulnerable to harm due to their lack of protection in an accident.
In the case of the crash on South Clinton Street, the pedestrian was pinned under the bus, illustrating the extreme danger of such accidents.
Here are some factors that make pedestrian accidents involving buses so dangerous:
- Size and weight of buses. Buses are much larger and heavier than smaller vehicles, which means they have a greater impact when a collision occurs. The force of a bus striking a pedestrian can result in severe injuries, including broken bones, head trauma, or even more catastrophic injuries.
- Limited visibility. Buses have larger blind spots, especially when making turns or stopping. The driver’s ability to see pedestrians may be impaired, especially in low-light conditions or areas with heavy traffic. This can increase the risk of a collision, particularly when pedestrians are near the bus or cross its path unexpectedly.
- Frequent stops and turns. Buses often make frequent stops and turns, especially in urban areas, increasing the chances of unexpected encounters with pedestrians. These stops can happen quickly, and the bus may not always be able to maintain a clear view of pedestrians crossing or near the vehicle.
- Vulnerability of pedestrians. Pedestrians lack the protection that drivers and passengers in vehicles have, which makes them more susceptible to serious injury when involved in a crash. Even at lower speeds, being struck by a bus can cause life-changing injuries or, tragically, result in wrongful death.
If you or someone you know has been injured in a pedestrian accident involving a bus or another large vehicle, it’s crucial to seek legal advice. Pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries, costly medical bills, and long-term recovery.
