Keene, NY (November 19, 2025) – A woman from Saranac Lake died and another person suffered critical injuries after a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Monday, November 17, along New York State Route 73 in Keene. The collision happened shortly before 4 p.m. as winter-like slush created dangerous roadway conditions.
The New York State Police said a tractor-trailer traveled east on Route 73 when the driver lost control on the slick roadway. The truck jackknifed and slid into the westbound lane. At the same time, a 57-year-old woman driving west could not avoid the trailer as it crossed into her path. The impact caused severe damage to her vehicle. Responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
An 84-year-old woman from Saranac Lake rode in the same vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews transported her to Adirondack Medical Center and later transferred her to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
A third driver traveling behind the tractor-trailer also struck the vehicle and then hit a nearby rock wall. That driver and the tractor-trailer operator did not suffer injuries. Police said the truck driver is not facing charges at this time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the woman who died, and we hope the injured passenger receives the care she needs for a full recovery.
Tractor-Trailer Accidents in New York
Tractor-trailer accidents often lead to severe injuries because of the size and weight of commercial trucks. In New York, winding roads, steep terrain, and unpredictable weather increase these risks. Busy roads can become especially hazardous during sudden weather changes, including slush, ice, or heavy snowfall. These conditions reduce traction and make it harder for drivers to maintain control, particularly when operating large trucks.
When a tractor-trailer jackknifes, the trailer swings to the side, blocking lanes and creating a high risk of head-on collisions. Drivers approaching the area often have little time to react, which increases the severity of these crashes. This recent incident in Keene shows how quickly dangerous weather and road conditions can escalate into a deadly event.
Families affected by these tragedies often struggle to understand what happened and what they can do next. Legal guidance can help them evaluate the crash, review evidence, and understand whether negligence played a role. Wrongful death claims may allow families to pursue compensation that helps cover the sudden financial strain caused by a serious crash.
Common types of compensation may include:
- Emergency medical treatment and transportation costs often place large, unexpected burdens on families after a crash.
- Funeral and burial expenses create additional stress during an already painful time.
- Loss of income or future earnings can deeply affect a family’s financial stability.
- Damages for pain, suffering, and emotional trauma which recognize the long-term impact of a fatal or severe collision.
A wrongful death lawyer can help families gather crash reports, speak with insurance companies, and protect their rights during a difficult time. This support allows them to focus on healing while a legal professional handles the complex details.
