Linden, NJ (October 24, 2025) – A deadly crash on the New Jersey Turnpike claimed the life of a 72-year-old Matawan man on Thursday night, October 23.
According to the New Jersey State Police, the collision occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. near milepost 97.1 in the southbound outer roadway of the Turnpike in Linden. The victim, identified as a 72-year-old man from Matawan, was driving a Mercedes in the far-left lane when his vehicle made contact with a Freightliner semi traveling in the same direction.
Investigators reported that the right side of the Mercedes collided with the front of the semi, which was not hauling a trailer at the time. The impact caused severe damage to the Mercedes. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, but the driver of the Mercedes succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Freightliner driver, a 22-year-old man from Passaic, was not injured during the crash. Police closed several lanes for hours as they examined the scene and worked to determine the cause of the deadly accident. The investigation remains ongoing.
