Newark, NJ (April 6, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash sent two children and a firefighter to the hospital on Sunday, April 5, along McCarter Highway near Exit 4. Police responded around 5:13 p.m. after receiving reports of several vehicles involved in a chain-reaction accident.
Newark Public Safety said the crash started when a driver suddenly stopped in the northbound lanes. The car behind it stopped quickly, but another vehicle struck it from the rear, setting off a five-car collision. The driver who stopped was not hit and left the area before officers arrived.
At the same time, a firefighter traveling in the southbound lanes pulled over to assist. Another vehicle then struck his car from behind, causing a separate two-vehicle crash in that direction.
Authorities confirmed that three additional vehicles in the northbound lanes became involved in a related crash tied to the initial incident. The series of collisions led to multiple damaged vehicles and several injuries at the scene.
Emergency crews treated those involved and transported two children and the firefighter to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Officials have not shared details about the extent of their injuries.
Investigators are working to determine the full sequence of events and whether any charges may follow. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
