Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Washington, NJ?
In New Jersey, the answer depends largely on the type of insurance coverage a driver carries. New Jersey is a no-fault state, which means that after a crash, each driver’s own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays for their initial medical expenses, regardless of who caused the wreck. PIP coverage is required under New Jersey law and applies whether you were driving, a passenger, or even a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
In the case that medical costs exceed what PIP covers, or when injuries are serious enough to meet a legal threshold, a hurt person may be able to step outside the no-fault system and pursue a claim against the at-fault driver.
People hurt in two-car crashes can face a range of injuries such as whiplash, soft tissue damage, broken bones, and head trauma. Some of these may not be fully apparent in the hours right after a collision. Medical bills, lost wages, and ongoing treatment costs can add up quickly, and it is not always easy figuring out which insurance applies to which expense.
A car accident lawyer can review the details of your situation and help clarify what coverage may apply and what additional options may be available. Legal guidance can be especially helpful when dealing with insurance companies that dispute the extent of your injuries or the costs involved.
