Paterson, NJ (July 21, 2025) – A man died and two others were injured early on July 21 in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Paterson.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. near milepost 60.2. According to New Jersey State Police, a Cadillac traveling east collided with a Toyota. After the crash, the Cadillac stopped in the left lane, and its three occupants, including 36-year-old Clarence Fennel, exited the vehicle.
As the occupants stood on the roadway, an eastbound Tesla struck the rear of the Toyota. The impact forced the Toyota forward, hitting Fennel and the two other men standing near the Cadillac.
Fennel, a Paterson resident, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cadillac’s driver sustained minor injuries, while the other passenger suffered moderate injuries. All others involved in the crash were unharmed.
No names besides Fennel’s have been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by New Jersey State Police.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Clarence Fennel and hope for a full recovery for those injured.
Interstate Crashes in New Jersey
High-speed crashes on interstates like I-80 often result in catastrophic injuries or death. When vehicles stop unexpectedly or occupants exit onto the roadway, the risks increase dramatically, especially at night when visibility is limited.
Interstate 80 is one of New Jersey’s busiest highways. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, multi-vehicle crashes involving stopped vehicles are common and frequently lead to severe outcomes. Here are common contributing factors to these tragic incidents:
- Poor Visibility: Crashes are more likely when it’s dark or foggy, limiting drivers’ ability to react in time.
- Stopped Vehicles: Disabled or wrecked vehicles in active lanes create sudden hazards for other drivers.
- Pedestrians on Highways: People exiting vehicles on highways face extreme danger due to high-speed traffic.
- Rear-End Collisions: Chain-reaction crashes often begin when a car hits another from behind, as seen in this case.
- Distracted Driving: Even a brief lapse in focus can have deadly consequences on fast-moving roads.
Families affected by interstate accidents often struggle with funeral expenses, medical bills, and emotional trauma. A wrongful death attorney can help determine liability and pursue compensation from those at fault.
