Pedestrian Killed by Overhead Wire on NJ Transit Tracks in Newark, NJ

July 15, 2026

Newark, NJ (July 15, 2026) – A pedestrian died early Tuesday morning, July 14, after coming into contact with an energized overhead wire on NJ Transit tracks beneath the Bathgate Place and 7th Street bridge crossing. The person was found unresponsive around 2:25 a.m.

Preliminary findings indicate the person was electrocuted by the high-voltage wire that powers NJ Transit trains. There is no indication that the person was struck by a train.

Service on the Morris & Essex Line was temporarily disrupted while crews repaired the damaged wire. Rail service has since resumed.

NJ Transit Police continue to investigate the accident.

Our condolences go out to the person's loved ones during this difficult time.

Who Can Be Responsible When Someone Is Electrocuted in Newark, NJ, Rail Tracks?Pedestrian Killed by Overhead Wire on NJ Transit Tracks

When a pedestrian is injured or killed by an energized rail component like a catenary wire, responsibility can fall on the transit agency responsible for maintaining safe conditions around its tracks and equipment.

Newark's rail corridors, including the nearby Broad Street and Newark Penn Station lines, carry heavy daily foot traffic near bridge crossings and platform access points throughout the city.

People injured by exposed or malfunctioning electrical equipment near rail lines can face severe burns, cardiac complications, or other injuries requiring extensive hospital treatment. In fatal cases, families are left to manage sudden funeral costs and the loss of a loved one's future income.

It is important to know that claims that involve public transit authorities like NJ Transit usually follow different procedural rules than typical personal injury cases, including shorter notice-of-claim deadlines that can be as short as 90 days from the date of injury.

Because of these tighter timelines, a Newark wrongful death lawyer can help determine whether the agency's fencing, signage, or wire maintenance practices met required safety standards and can assist with filing the necessary notice before a shorter deadline passes.

Our team at Metro Law has assessed plenty of cases across Newark and New Jersey in order to guide families through the process of a wrongful death claim. We can review your case and walk you through what options you may be entitled to under state law.
