Even a minor car crash can cause chaos and confusion, leaving victims unsure about what to do next. Taking the right steps immediately after an accident helps protect your health, your legal rights, and your ability to recover fair compensation for any damages.

If you are ever involved in a car accident in New York, here are the most important actions to take:

  1. Ensure everyone’s safety. Check yourself and others for injuries and call 911 right away.
  2. Move vehicles if safe. If the vehicles are blocking traffic but can still move, pull over to a safe area to prevent further collisions.
  3. Exchange information. Get the other driver’s name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and insurance details.
  4. Take photos and videos. Document the damage to all vehicles, the road conditions, and any visible injuries.
  5. Speak with police officers. Cooperate fully with responding officers and ensure that an official accident report is filed.
  6. Seek medical attention. Even if you feel fine, some injuries—like internal bleeding or concussions—may not show symptoms right away.
  7. Contact a car accident attorney. An experienced car accident lawyer can guide you through the claims process, negotiate with insurers, and help you recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering.

After an accident, insurance companies often act quickly to minimize their payouts. Victims who accept early settlement offers may later discover that their expenses far exceed what they were offered. Speaking with a qualified attorney before agreeing to any settlement can help you make informed decisions and protect your future.
