Woodbine, NJ (August 8, 2025) – A fatal crash in Cape May County on Tuesday afternoon, August 5, left one person dead and the driver injured. The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Route 611/Tyler Road near Fremont Ave in Woodbine.
Walter Chattin, 77, of Villas, was driving south when his vehicle veered off the road, struck a utility pole, and flipped over, according to New Jersey State Police. The vehicle caught fire shortly after the crash.
Despite the fire, Good Samaritans, including Paul Fowler, worked to rescue Chattin from the wreck. Fowler expressed regret on social media, sharing that he was unable to save Diana Chattin, 70, of Villas, and the couple’s two dogs, who were in the backseat. The fire spread too quickly for anyone to reach them. Tragically, Diana died from her injuries at the scene. Walter suffered burns, broken ribs, and other injuries and was hospitalised.
Walter later thanked Fowler for saving his life, calling him a hero for his brave actions. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
